Robbie Mahood, candidate for Québec Solidaire in Mont-Royal

[Version française.]

Robbie Mahood is a family physician living and working in Côte - des-Neiges for over 12 years.

He was born and raised in Saskatchewan. As a teenager, he witnessed the birth of Medicare, which was bitterly opposed by the medical profession and the Liberal Party.

In the 1960`s, he campaigned against the Vietnam War along with thousands of his generation.

He studied medicine and moved to Winnipeg, working in an inner-city clinic and collaborating with Dr. Henry Morgentaler in the struggle for abortion rights in that city.

He is a member of Canadian Doctors for Medicare and Médécins Québecois pour un Regime Public. The threat to our public health care system is an urgent priority, according to Dr. Mahood. “The Charest Liberals”, he states, “are opting for more privatization and continued neglect of our hospitals and CLSC’s. The PQ offers no alternative to this disastrous course and Mario Dumont’s ADQ favours even more rabid privatization. We have to oppose the move to two-tiered medical care and that’s one of the main reasons I’m running for Québec Solidaire.”

A lifelong socialist, Dr. Mahood is a supporter of Quebec independence.  At the same time, he wants a sovereign Quebec that is open and tolerant. Defence of the rights of immigrants and refugees as well as aboriginal peoples is paramount and we must oppose all forms of racism and xenophobia. Dr. Mahood was active with others in the demand for a public inquiry into the police killing of a young Muslim man in Côte-des-Neiges.

The global capitalist system is now entering a crisis of historic proportions and Quebec will not fail to feel its impact. At the same time we are facing the prospect of ecological collapse. We cannot look to the pro-capitalist parties, the Liberals, the PQ and the ADQ for solutions. Their track record is clear: attacking union rights, cutting back on public services, raising university fees, urging us to place our faith in the market while incomes remain stagnant and ordinary people face ever-rising costs for food, housing and transport.

Quebec Solidaire is a party that unites people who believe we can build a different kind of society, one not based on competition and the endless pursuit of profit but rather on human solidarity, common ownership and control of our most important economic and social resources and collective action to end destructive environmental practices.    We need a party that will defend working people: those with a union or unorganized, working or unemployed, the elderly living on a small pension or young people struggling to find their place in the world, a party that also recognizes the oppression of women and people of colour and is opposed to war and subjugation of other nations.
