Pour une économie plus juste, plus équitable et plus humaine

Née en Alexandrie, Égypte, Nadia Alexan réside à Montréal depuis 1967. Elle a fait carrière comme professeur de langue et de littérature anglaise au secondaire, au sein des écoles publiques de Montréal. Elle détient trois baccalauréats en Littérature anglaise, en Éducation et en Sciences politiques, de même que des études en journalisme. Elle maîtrise trois langues : l’anglais, le français et l’arabe.

Elle a été choisie par sa Commission Scolaire pour travailler sur le comité de la condition féminine afin de promouvoir les intérêts des femmes. Elle a fondé et a coordonné pendant six ans la section montréalaise du Conseil des Canadiens, un organisme de justice sociale. Elle a été élue membre du Conseil québécois du NPD, et a été candidate pour le NPD pour les élections fédérales de 2004. Elle est membre de l’équipe les Amis du Monde Diplomatique et milite avec ATTAC Montréal. Elle écrit aux journaux, parle à la radio et à la télévision et elle est demandée comme conférencière par plusieurs organismes à Montréal.

Elle a fait plusieurs témoignages devant les commissions fédérales et provinciales, citons notamment

• –la Commission provinciale Clair sur la santé en 2001, quand elle s’est prononcée contre les soins de santé à deux vitesses,
• –devant le CRTC elle a plaidé en faveur de la radiodiffusion publique,
• –la Commission Romanow sur la santé
• –devant le comité des affaires étrangères et du Commerce International, pour se prononcer contre notre participation à la guerre en Afghanistan.  

En mars 2003, elle a été choisie ‘femme de l’année,’ par le journal Place Publique, dans le cadre de la journée internationale des femmes, pour sa lutte contre la privatisation de nos instances publiques et la commercialisation de chaque aspect de notre vie. Elle milite pour une éducation universelle et gratuite, surtout à l’échelle universitaire. En 2007, elle a fondé ‘Action Citoyenne,’ une organisation progressiste, altermondialiste, non partisane et sans but lucratif, pour la justice sociale et économique. Elle organise une conférence publique, sur un enjeu politique, une fois par mois, à l’Université Concordia.  Elle milite contre la globalisation sauvage depuis vingt ans. Dévouée à la cause de la justice sociale, elle œuvre pour  une économie plus humaine et une fiscalité plus équitable pour tou(te)s les Québécois et Québécoises.

Who is Nadia Alexan :

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, of Christian Coptic heritage, Nadia is a Canadian citizen since she immigrated to Montreal in 1967. She had a successful career as a professional high school teacher. She has three B.A. degrees in English Literature, Education, Political Science, as well as studies in Journalism. She masters three languages: English, French, Arabic and some Italian.

Nadia is well-known for her dynamism. Thus in 1980, she was nominated by her School Board to work on the Feminine Committee, to improve the lot of female teachers. In 1996, she founded & coordinated the Montreal Chapter of the Council of Canadians, which promotes social and economic justice. She was also a member of the NDP Quebec Board, and ran as an NDP candidate during the 2004 federal elections.

She is also a board member of Les Amis du Monde Diplomatique and is also an activist with ATTAC Quebec. She is well-known for her progressive advocacy for social justice in the media. She is often invited to speak on different political issues by many Montreal organizations. She has also organized hundreds of conferences featuring such notable speakers as Julius Grey, renowned lawyer, Laure Waridel, Fair Trade advocate & writer, Maude Barlow, author & chairperson of the Council of Canadians and many others.

She has also testified in front of many provincial and federal Commissions, notably, the CRTC, in favour of the CBC & public broadcasting. She has also testified against a two-tiered healthcare system, in front of the Romanow Commission, as well as the Claire Commission, on public health care. In 2005, she testified against Canada’s participation in the Afghan War, in front of the Committee on Foreign Affairs & International Commerce. In 2007, she testified in front of the Bouchard/Taylor Commission, investigating “reasonable accommodation,” in favour of a secular society and the right to dissent & challenge religious beliefs.

In 2003, in celebration of International Women’s Day, she was chosen as “Woman of the Year,” by the Montreal newspaper, “Place Publique,” for her struggle against the privatization and commercialization of public institutions.

In October 2007, Nadia established “Citizens in Action Montreal,” a non-profit, non-partisan progressive organization of concerned citizens, for the promotion of social & economic justice and for the lobbying of governments for the public good.

Nadia is well-known for her ardent activism against the creeping, savage privatization of our public services, and the commercialization of every aspect of our lives She is also devoted to a fair fiscal system, which would benefit all Canadians, not just the one per cent at the top.
